XF default Style or not ?

Hello community,
I was looking for some styles for XF, and some are really cool (Vertiforo, UI.X 2 , ... ), some ( or quite all ) using ajax scroll...
My question is : general performance are generally better or on the contrary worst ?

Than there is the topic to mantain (also) the style...during the years..., but this is another topic.

What your experience or suggestion ?
Saying that my pro forum is based overall in images, pictures with XFMG , if can help...
